I usually can’t stand love poems. They’re always so syrupy, so mushy. But yours isn’t. It’s the questions. It’s not performing, it’s not a statement, it’s not asking me to just accept it. You’re kissing the wounds, not the features, the mind, the doubts, the ghosts, not eyes or lips.
And that ending doesn’t go big. It just goes plain: I’ll start kissing you today and I’ll never stop. No fireworks. That restraint is the whole reason it works.
I’m not so good at performative poems that all they do is use big words and metaphors to describe love and their lover.
I feel like more and more I want to capture the love that’s in the small details of everyday life and most importantly, in the good and the bad moments of everyday life.
It’s very easy to love someone at first when it’s all about going out and having fun, but I find it more compelling to write about love when that’s gone.
